Synopsis |
América Móvil (BMV:AMX), a Mexico-based mobile telephony operator, hopes to be able to offer pay TV services after a long preparation process to meet conditions imposed by regulators, reported Bloomberg on 12 February, 2016, citing the company's chairman, Carlos Slim Domit. Slim noted the company will attempt to obtain a pay TV license in a process that will last from March to November 2016, during which América Móvil will have to prove it has taken the necessary measures to fulfill the regulations imposed by the government. According to the report, the federal telecommunications institute (IFT) will analyze whether regulations that have forced América Móvil to share infrastructure and reduce rates had any effect in containing the company's dominance in Mexico's telecommunications market. The initial goal was to cut its market share down to 50%. Currently, the pay TV market in Mexico is led by Televisa (BMV:TLEVISA), which boasts a share of 60.9%, the report stated.
