SPAIN
Spain registered a similar number of deals during the first three months in 2012 as it did the year before - approximately 70 deals per month - although the investment volume decreased. Highlights, in the financial sector, include the acquisition closure of Banco Santander Colombia by the Chile-based CorpBanca; and the merger agreement announcement between Caixabank and Banca Cívica. Cross-border deals were also noteworthy, both Spanish companies investing abroad and foreign investors in Spain.

PORTUGAL
The Portuguese transactional market was a surprisingly dynamic during March, with a special note to the transversal nature of the investment sectors involved in this month's transactions. The activity was reflected in many fields: M&A's, capital markets, and project finance deals. Highlights also include two important takeover offers to acquire Portuguese companies - Brisa and Cimpor. The outcome is still unknown.
