Synopsis |
The EU and Mexico will begin negotiations this year to reach a free trade agreement, reported CNN Expansión on 12 May, 2015. Based on a pact signed with Mexico in 2000, the EU hopes to establish a transatlantic free trade zone, as well as global trade rules before China does. The trade commissioner for the EU, Cecilia Malmstrom, explained the EU is willing to reach an ambitious agreement. The declarations were made during a forum in Brussels attended by Mexico's finance minister, Ildefonso Guajardo. EU officials are expected to discuss the issue further during an EU-Latin America summit to be held in Brussels on 12 June. Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto is expected to attend. For the EU, a new treaty with Mexico would further expand access for companies from both markets to bid in public tenders of each territory.
